Upon release, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction received critical acclaim, with critics celebrating the series' return to its roots. Insomniac aimed to use the 'Future' saga to enrich the series' mythology and provide the characters with more depth. Insomniac Games developed Tools of Destruction from the ground-up to take full advantage of the PlayStation 3's power, using a modified engine of their 2006 game Resistance: Fall of Man to test new assets and design experimental levels. The game uses the motion-control functionalities of the PlayStation 3's SIXAXIS controller. Ratchet is able to use a variety of futuristic and exotic weapons, while Clank returns as a playable character. The game retains a more balanced gameplay design in comparison to its predecessor, which leaned towards a more action-oriented title. The game is presented from a third-person perspective, in which players primarily control Ratchet as he and Clank as they explore the galaxy of Polaris.

The game also introduces Talwyn Apogee, a character who serves a major role in the 'Future' saga. In Tools of Destruction, series protagonists Ratchet and Clank find themselves in the aforementioned galaxy, trying to stop the plans of the ruthless Emperor Tachyon, whose empire forces have deep connections with Ratchet and Clank's backstories. Unlike most previous games which were set around the 'Solana' galaxy, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction takes place in the 'Polaris' galaxy. It is the fifth main installment in the Ratchet & Clank series and the sequel to 2005's Ratchet: Deadlocked, as well as the first installment in the 'Future' saga.
